ST. LOUIS (Dec. 1, 2020) – Tammy Stankey, director of communications at The Doe Run Company (Doe Run), has been appointed to the board of The International Lead Association (ILA), which supports the safe production, use and recycling of lead worldwide.

ILA consists of nearly 40 member companies who are involved in the mining, smelting, refining and recycling of lead globally. The association provides members with technical, scientific and communications support, and coordinates opportunities for experts to meet on issues of importance to the lead industry.

“As a lead producer and lead battery recycler with customers across the globe, it’s important for Doe Run to be part of international discussions that shape the future of the lead industry,” said Tammy Stankey, director of communications at Doe Run. “The ILA fosters opportunities to share environmental and safety practices, and educate key stakeholders on the sustainable nature of the lead and battery industries. It also actively supports efforts to address the health and environmental risks of unregulated, informal recycling in low to middle income countries. I’m pleased to join the work of the board on these important issues.”

Lead batteries have a 99% recycle rate in developed nations and account for up to 90% of all lead use. They are essential for starting cars and trucks, safeguarding communications networks, providing critical back-up power, and storing energy from wind and solar farms. ILA advocates for and supports pre-competitive research that advances lead batteries’ applications in motive and renewable energy storage applications.

Stankey is also active in leadership roles in Battery Council International (BCI) and the Consortium for Battery Innovation, where she helps communicate the vital role of lead batteries in a circular economy. She is a past speaker at national and international conferences for BCI and the ILA, a recipient of an IABC National Award of Merit, and a PRSA National Award of Excellence. Stankey holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Lindenwood University.

Stankey manages all aspects of Doe Run’s internal and external communications, including outreach to rural Missouri schools to improve STEM education and prepare students for jobs of the future. She also leads up the company’s sustainability reporting process and oversees Doe Run’s award-winning annual Sustainability Report utilizing the Global Reporting Index (GRI) framework.
