ST. LOUIS (Aug. 12, 2019) – The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) recognizes milestones in workplace safety and mine rescue achievements in honor of Safe + Sound Week 2019.

“At Doe Run, we encourage our employees to take an active role in sharing ideas and implementing new programs that minimize safety issues,” said Steve Batts, Doe Run vice president and chief operating officer. “As a result of our safe work practices, several of our sites achieve important safety milestones year after year.”

In 2019, the following Doe Run facilities achieved safety milestones:

  • Sweetwater Mill achieved 22 years without a lost-time accident, and Sweetwater Mine’s surface team achieved 15 years without a lost-time accident.
  • The Seafab Metals facility of Fabricated Products Inc. (FPI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Doe Run, achieved more than 19 years without a lost-time accident.
  • Brushy Creek Mill achieved 13 years without a lost-time accident.
  • SEMO Port, the Missouri riverport where Doe Run ships our metals concentrates, achieved 13 years without a lost-time accident.
  • Mine No. 29 achieved 9 years without a lost-time accident.
  • Buick Mill achieved 8 years without a lost-time accident.
  • Fletcher Mill achieved 5 years without a lost-time accident.

Doe Run’s Gray team won the title of overall contest champion at the Northern Mine Rescue Competition in New York and their Maroon Mine Rescue team won the same title at the Southwest Regional Mine Rescue Contest in New Mexico. The teams compete in mine rescue competitions annually to keep their skills sharp in the event of an underground emergency.

Doe Run’s Resource Recycling facility introduced MSHA’s SLAM (Stop, Look, Analyze and Manage) program to gather safety improvement ideas from employees. The competition winner, electrician Richard Snow, proposed and led hands-on educational courses on electrical safety at Resource Recycling.

Companywide, Doe Run employees participated in more than 30,000 hours of training in 2018, including extensive health and safety training. This focus on training has helped Doe Run’s facilities reduce the total case incident rates (TCIR) by over 32% since 2015.

Battery Council International (BCI), one of Doe Run’s industry associations, is featuring companies and their safety commitments throughout Safe + Sound Week. Read the full blog post here.
