ST. LOUIS (December 2, 2019) — The Doe Run Company’s (Doe Run) skilled mine rescue teams finished first in events at the Missouri Regional Mine Rescue Contest in Rolla, Missouri, Sept. 30 – Oct. 3, 2019. Doe Run’s Maroon team won first place for the team technician competition, and the Gray team won first place in first aid.

The team technician competition tested technical troubleshooting of equipment rescuers might have to use in an emergency, such as breathing apparatuses. The first aid competition consisted of a CPR and first-responder scenario, critical processes for employee safety.

Held at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, the competition is one of the most widely attended mine rescue contests in the nation, and more than 20 teams came together to compete this year.

“Employee safety is always top of mind in everything we do at Doe Run,” said Ryan Seelke, safety manager at Doe Run’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO). “Each year, the mine rescue teams’ achievements at these contests, combined with ongoing training, prepares them to be ready to aid fellow miners should a real-life emergency occur.”

At the contest, Charlie Walker, development miner at Doe Run’s Brushy Creek Mine and captain of the Gray team, was inducted into the Missouri Mine Rescue Hall of Fame. Walker was recognized for nearly 30 years of significant contributions to the field of mine rescue.

As part of the company’s underground safety program, mine rescue teams complete eight hours of training monthly. The teams compete in mine rescue competitions annually to keep their skills sharp and prepare them to help fellow miners in real-life situations.
