ST. LOUIS (Dec. 11, 2017) – The mining industry is continuously growing, with a need for 50,000 new employees by 2019, and 3.5 million manufacturing jobs expected over the next decade. The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) continued its commitment to providing Missouri students with educational tools necessary for careers in mining and manufacturing with donations to Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) and Valley R-VI schools.

This fall, Doe Run donated a new Ingersoll Rand R1101 air compressor valued at $50,000 to Missouri S&T. More than 300 undergraduate and graduate students throughout the mining engineering, civil, explosives and certificate programs will utilize the compressor in the university’s drilling and blasting classes.

“Missouri S&T’s ties to the mining industry have been strong since the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy was founded nearly 150 years ago,” said Dr. Christopher Maples, Missouri S&T interim chancellor. “Today, this legacy continues to grow, and our partnership with Doe Run is a large part of the reason why. Missouri S&T is proud of our partnership with Doe Run, and we are grateful for the company’s investment in our students.”

“We’re fortunate to have such an outstanding university right here in southeast Missouri. It’s important that we help these students get the best education possible as they are the future leaders of our industry,” said Mark Coomes, Doe Run vice president – human resources and community relations. “We also want to foster an interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and of course, mining. The equipment and other assistance we provide helps to support that interest.”

Doe Run also donated $10,000 to Valley R-VI school district’s Project Lead The Way (PLTW), a four-year STEM curriculum that focuses on project-based learning and prepares students to solve real-world problems in a collaborative environment. PLTW prepares students for STEM careers, including those in the growing mining and manufacturing industries, which employ more than 270,000 people throughout Missouri. Valley R-VI school district has 400 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“Our partnership with Doe Run, along with their generous gift, helps make PLTW possible,” said Trina Pritchett, Valley R-VI high school science teacher and PLTW gateway instructor.
