Nearly one in every five children in Missouri are living in poverty, according to the Children’s Defense Fund. To help address this need, The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) donated $3,000, as well as food and supplies collected by employees, to charitable programs serving children and families in the Southeast Missouri community.

Doe Run donated $2,500 to support the Backpack Buddies program at five local schools: Bunker Elementary, Steelville Elementary, Viburnum Elementary, Lesterville Elementary, and Salem Elementary. Backpack programs provide crucial school supplies, clothing, food and hygiene items for students in grades K-6 and their families.

“Years ago, our employees selected the Backpack Buddies program as a way to help families in our region,” said Steve Batts, vice president and chief operating officer. “Contributing backpacks and supplies each year is important to us, because it supports our neighbors in the communities where we live and work.”

Employees at the Resource Recycling facility also donated $500 to the Shriners Transportation Fund, which helps transport children with medical needs to the hospital for treatment.

Doe Run’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) employees also collected food items for the local food banks, donating more than 3,600 food and non-perishable items to the A Plus CDS in Salem, Mission Food Pantry in Bunker, and Disabled Citizens Alliance for Independence (DCAI) in Viburnum. Additionally, Viburnum Central Office, Exploration, Geology, and the Lab donated canned goods to DCAI. Employees at each of Doe Run’s mines and mills also provided holiday gifts for families in the Bunker R-3 School District, Belleview R-3 School District and the Iron County (Viburnum) C-4 FBLA chapter.
